Cathy Wiedmann  reports:
The NJ Titans went into this weekend’s games verses the Penguins and Senators looking to build momentum to carry into this weekends tournament in Virginia. They did just that by winning back to back games in impressive fashion playing two totally different games.
Saturday The Titans traveled to Ice Rock Arena and played a wild wide open game vs the Penguins and Sunday at Wall played a more conservative, solid game.
After dropping the prior two close games to the Titans the Penguins were definitely up for Saturdays matchup. The Penguins came out flying and victimized starting goalie Cody Reilly with two powerplay goals to open up a two goal lead. The Titans responded in the second period and refused to not let this game get away from them. The Titans charged back with three unanswered goals. Charlie Morton started the scoring in the second with his signature slapshot, followed by Will Conte’s powerplay goal and Timmy Behan’s tally to end the exciting second period with a 3-2 lead. The Penguins opened the scoring in the third by netting their third powerplay goal to tie the game 3-3. Dax Conrad playing a great defensive game chipped in some offense to regain the lead at 4-3.
The Titans gave the lead back when they gave up their fourth powerplay goal of the game to the relentless
Penguins for the 4-4 tie. Not letting up, the Titans Johnathan Weinstein tipped in goal at 8:52 that proved to be the backbreaker and game winner. A busy Reilly and the defense settled in afterward and shut out the Penguins the rest of the way with Cody stopping 20 0f 24 shots! Dax Conrad put the game out of reach when he netted his second goal of the game for the 6-4 victory. Pat, “don’t call me Bam Bam” Bruno saw some action around the net and is now officially 2-0 in his battles in the crease, Ha Ha Ha.
Sundays game against the Grundy Senators was a complete opposite game from Saturdays wild high scoring game. The Titans went back to basics with solid defense and opportunistic scoring for this 4-2 victory. The first period belonged to a hot Charlie Morton as he scored two goals and his third in two days! Thomas Wiedmann starting in nets keep the Senators at bay with some nifty saves for the 2-0 lead ending the first.
The second period turned into special teams play for both teams when a total of six penalties were called. The Titans penalty killing unit which gave up four goals Saturday, clamped down and shut down the Senators 5 on 3 opportunity and two other 5 on 4’s. Will Conte scored his second powerplay goal of the weekend to produce a Titan 3-0 lead to end the second period. Both teams seemed to play smarter in the third, keep out of the box, and got back to 5 on 5 hockey. The Senators took advantage of a miscue at the blueline and raced in for a breakaway goal which eluded “Weeds” and ended his shutout bid at 10:38. Charlie Morton’s big weekend continued when he completed his hat trick at 9:13 for the 4-1 lead!
The game was all tucked away when the Senators caught the Titan “D” by surprise and snuck in a goal at 1:08 of the third for the 4-2 finale. Good luck in VA Titans! Congrats to coach Gibby when he announced he’s going to be adding a new member to “his” team!
