This is a summary of the Titan Midget program from our 10th anniversary brochure. Read about other levels and more by visiting http://jrtitans.wordpress.com/titan-2008-2009-info/ andhttp://jrtitans.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/titansbook0809322.pdfMany clubs force a tough decision on their players as they leave Bantams and enter Midgets: play club travel hockey or High School hockey, but not both. This ends the club careers of many players.

Remember, the Titans are different and want you to be with us through H.S., and help to place you into a great college program. A number of Titan coaches also coach H.S. teams, and we understand the desire many have to wear their school colors on the ice. The quality of H.S. hockey continues to improve in the area and we are supportive of our local schools.

For this reason, we offer two choices for our Midget players: Short Season or Full Season. The Short Season teams, available at T1 and T2 play a front-loaded schedule, giving teams a busy fall with enough games to qualify for playoffs, but ending the regular season by December 1, before the major commitments of the H.S. season. Players are free to commit 100% of their effort to their school team, and are in prime physical condition.

The Full Season Midget program is just that; a full league schedule, September to February, including multiple tournaments, showcases and exhibitions with top New England Prep Schools. The time commitment here is significant, but the level of competition at T1 Midget is unsurpassed by all but a few hockey oriented prep schools. It truly is your choice as to which option you select. Players in both categories are tracked by our junior coaches, as our Midgets are our prime source of Junior players.

The Tier 1 AAA U18 full season team is a “slow down team” which means we will still front load league games. After High School starts the team will reduce their commitment to 1 practice a week and maybe 1 game a weekend.
The Tier 1 AAA U16 National team will follow the same pattern as the u18

The Tier 1 AAA U16 American team is a full blown short season that means they will shut down /stop on Dec. 1.

T2 is all short season. The choice is yours. We only ask that you make this choice before tryouts, so that we can evaluate you with other players in the same category.

Andrew (Titan PeeWee A Black) was very unlucky Saturday.  His broken femur is not a common hockey injury.  That is where the bad luck ended.  We were blessed  from the minute the accident happened.  The Blizzard parents went out of their way to get us emergency help and to console Andrew’s mom.  The Titan coaches came to the emergency room, as did a few of his team mates.  Then, when we were transferred by ambulance from Hackettstown, it was to one of the best Children’s Trauma Centers around.  At Morristown, our surgeon (which we needed around 11PM Saturday), happened to be a pediatric orthopedic specialist with a sports medicine practice.  Given the late hour, we were very lucky to get her.  She performed a newer type of surgery that while very painful for a while, will not impact his growth, and should allow for a full recovery.

The children’s hospital was great for kids, with lots of distractions like video games and movies for sick children, but these did not really lift his spirits.  Then, just as he was feeling pretty miserable this morning, we were told some guests were coming to the hospital.  Much to Andrew’s amazement, Devils Zach Parise #9, Travis Zajac #19, and John Madden #11 were coming to the hospital to visit with the sick kids after practice.  Since he broke his leg playing hockey, they had lots to talk about.  The players gave him a signed jersey, some other autograph items and signed his Titan Jersey.  For a half hour he had no pain and a smile on his face.  Now he is home.  We have gotten so many calls, e-mails and well wishes, we are very grateful to our whole Titan family.  Andrew will need a few weeks to be able to leave the house, but after that he hopes to see all of his friends at the rink.

Andrew and the boys have some fun

When you see 4 or 5 coaches on the ice for a Titan practice, the coach you do not know is likely well known in hockey circles. Some of our Titan coaches also coach at other levels, and some are off to a great start. Squirt Coach Jay Monteverdi is enjoying success in his first season as the head coach with the St. John Vianney Lancers. Supported by George Haviland and Sal Spinale, the club is 5-1-1 and enjoys a 16th rating in the latest Star Ledger Statewide HS Hockey poll, and 11 in the State Power Rankings. Another is Bantam Coach Mike Dianora who’s Wall HS has 6 wins and his scrappy team is rated 6th overall in the toughest public division.

monmouth.jpgAnother team that plays at the rink having a great season is the Monmouth University Ice Hawks. The Hawks are coached by Fred Berzolla, also a Titan T1 Midget coach. Monmouth is 9-2 in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, comprised of over 120 colleges across the country. The Hawks lead the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey League and have dominated opponents this season with a powerful offense that is averaging almost 6 goals per game. They have 4 league leaders in scoring and 6 DVCHL All-Stars on the squad. Congratulations on a great start Coach Fred. Their next home game is at Wall January 19 @ 5PM. Come out an see some great college hockey.

So if you are at practice and a coach you do not know is helping out, listen carefully to what they have to say, they know their stuff. Work hard for them. You might wind up trying out for their team some day. Good luck guys, we hope all of your teams make the playoffs and go far!

uhlicehogs.gifIn case you were wondering how Coach Mike Haviland is doing in his new home at the AHL Blackhawks affiliate Rockford IceHogs, one look at the standings in the Western Conference will tell you he is doing quite well.  At the halfway point of the season, the Hogs sit in first place, having recently ended a 16-game point streak.  Martin St. Pierre has a 14-game scoring streak, the longest in the AHL this season.  St. Pierre leads the IceHogs with 44 points including 31 assists, and is second in the league in total scoring.  There is still a long way to go in the season, and the pesky Chicago Wolves are nipping at the Hogs heels, one point back in the standings.  The two teams meet tonight in Rockford with the top spot in the divison on the line.  (No local TV here covers the game, you can listen or watch on the web)

Coach Havliand is building off of the Coach of the Year season he had in Norfolk, last year before the club moved to its new home.  Coaching in the AHL is very different as your NHL ‘parent’ club is likely to take your best, or at least borrow them to fill in for injuries, or send players ’down’, altering team chemistry.  Congratulations on a fine first half, let’s hope the second half is as good and leads to a great playoff run!

It is with great pride that the Junior Titans staff would like to congratulate the following Junior C Major players for being selected to participate in the Continental Hockey Association All-Star Jamboree 2008:

Ben Yuro, Mike Garbandt,  & Joe Torrisi

The All Star Jamboree will take place in Binghamton NY Jan 18-20.  We know these players will represent the Titan organization well!

From The CHA press release:

The Continental Hockey Assoc. is pleased to announce its 1st Annual All Star Jamboree Weekend.  This great event will be held January 19-21, 2008 and will be hosted by the Binghamton Senators at the Chenango Ice Rink.

The CHA will field six All Star Teams covering all three levels of competition presently offered in the league.  The Southeast Junior Hockey League will also be sending their All Star team to the event.  The Hampton Roads Independent team along with the Binghamton Senators “A” and “B” teams will also be participating.

College scouts from the NCAA and ACHA have been invited to attend the All Star Weekend.  All Tier III A teams along with the USHL, NAHL, OPJHL, QMJHL and Golden Horseshoe Leagues have also been invited to attend.

There will be a different look to this All Star event than in the past.  The C Minor Teams (Development League) will compete against each other.  However the C Major Teams and the Junior B teams will select their All Star players who will be put into a general pool of players.  We will then select the players based on age to participate in either the U17 or U19 age group.  Each age group will field two teams.  The U17 teams will play each other as well as the SEJHL All Star Team and the U19 teams will play each other as well as the Hampton Roads Independent Team.

cw.jpgA busy holiday weekend is on tap for some of the T2 Titan teams.  The Hershey Jr. Bears are hosting a Thanksgiving tournament with all the fixin’s.  The Mites, the Squirt A, Squirt B, PeeWee A black, PeeWee B, Bantam A black and 2 Bantam B teams will be competing at 4 different venues from Friday ’til Sunday.  Best of luck to all of the Titan teams.  See you in Chocolate World!
